Earth Hour - let's turn off the lights
The world's most widespread environmental event, Earth Hour, will take place again on Saturday, March 22, 2025, from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM. Forum will participate by switching off the shopping center's façade lighting and some illuminated signs for an hour in support of the environment. Read more and join us!
WWF's annual global climate campaign encourages individuals, businesses, cities, municipalities, and other organizations to switch off their lights for one hour simultaneously to raise awareness of climate change. Through this symbolic act, everyone can express their concern about the state of the environment and the climate crisis to decision-makers. Turn off the lights, light some candles, and enjoy a cozy moment for the climate!
Not just words, but energy actions
We consider it essential to take action for the environment and responsibility in various ways. Forum has its own solar power plant on the roof, and the Shopping Centre is entirely carbon neutral in terms of its operational energy consumption. The remaining electricity consumption is covered by emission-free wind power produced at the Lakiakangas wind farm in the municipality of Isojoki. We continuously assess emissions from property maintenance and operations and strive to minimize them.
We have also received high ratings in environmental certifications. Forum's property holds a BREEAM In-Use environmental certificate at the Excellent level. Additionally, in the international sustainability assessment GRESB, we achieved the highest rating of 5 stars and were named Global Sector Leader in our comparison group. The GRESB assessment covers all aspects of corporate responsibility, including environmental, social, governance, and sustainability factors.
Enabling responsible work
In addition to supporting environmental awareness through events like Earth Hour and the Baltic Sea Day, we also enable and take action in the realm of social responsibility. Our long-term collaboration with the Joulupuu charity drive helps collect funds and donations for the organization's target groups. Furthermore, we have been an official Helsinki Pride partner for the fifth consecutive year, advocating for equality. We engage in extensive charitable work and strive to highlight various social challenges.
More efficient recycling and smarter choices
At the end of 2024, the recycling rate at the shopping center was 53%, meaning that more than half of the waste generated at Forum is recycled and reused. The remaining portion is utilized for energy production, resulting in a total utilization rate of 100%. If sorted waste is not suitable for material reuse, it is directed to energy recovery.
With dozens of shops, cafés, and restaurants, our role is significant not only as an actor but also as an enabler and influencer. We aim to provide our tenants and visitors with a space where they have the opportunity to make more sustainable and responsible choices. Many of our stores also prioritize sustainability, which we are pleased to see. Last year, we launched a collaboration with the Recycling Center by introducing two donation boxes in the P-level. These donation points allow people to bring in intact and usable items for reuse, helping to conserve valuable natural resources and support the circular economy.
Forum as part of a larger whole
Forum is owned by the real estate investment company Sponda, which shares the top position as the world's most responsible real estate company in its comparison group in the 2024 global GRESB assessment. Additionally, we have set targets for indirect emissions within our value chain. Our climate goals are approved by the Science Based Targets initiative, and we promote biodiversity in our properties and real estate development projects in accordance with the biodiversity strategy we developed last year.
